The shapes of the objects shown here are often abstract, imaginative and show a skillful arrangement that is prized by African carvers. The concepts of African art have influenced much of 20th century Western art. Westerners have gradually come to a clearer understanding of African art, its cultural functions, its artistic values, and strong integration of aesthetics into daily life. Customarily, men carve wood, ivory, stone and work on metal, while most decorative work such as painting, textiles and basket weaving, is produced by women.
